A guide to Framlingham: Exploring one of Suffolk’s most iconic market towns

Inday Harrison 05 November 2026

Set amongst the rolling countryside of Suffolk, Framlingham is a charming market town that feels like stepping back in time. Best known for its impressive castle that inspired Ed Sheeran’s hit song Castle on the Hill and its peaceful surroundings, the town offers visitors a beautiful mix of history, nature, and small-town charm.

Whether you're planning to visit for a week or a quiet weekend escape, Framlingham has plenty to discover. My favourite way to spend time here is to spend the morning exploring medieval landmarks, followed by a delicious lunch in a cosy café, and spending the evening relaxing in a cosy cottage where you truly feel as though you’re living like a local. View the reel I put together of my day in beautiful Framlingham here.

Suffolk Secrets has a range of beautiful holiday cottages in and around Framlingham, so whether you’re looking for a cosy retreat for two or a spacious family getaway, each property is carefully selected to provide comfort, character, and a true taste of Suffolk living. Keep reading this exciting guide to learn everything you need to know about Framlingham.

Framlingham’s history

Framlingham Pharmacy on a blue sunny day.

Framlingham has a long and fascinating history that stretches back over a thousand years. It is of Anglo-Saxon origin, and its name is believed to mean ‘The village of Framela’s people’, which denotes that it was likely founded as an early settlement between the 5th and 7th centuries. Archaeological evidence suggests even earlier activity in the area, including Iron Age and Romano-British settlements nearby, showing that Framlingham has been populated for centuries before the town itself developed.

The town’s most defining feature is Framlingham Castle, which was first built in the 12th century. The castle was a major seat of power in East Anglia and played a role in national events, including conflicts with King John, who successfully captured it in 1216 during a period of unrest following Magna Carta. One of the most significant moments in Framlingham’s history came in July 1553, when Mary Tudor fled to the castle during a succession crisis. From here, she gathered supporters and was ultimately proclaimed Queen Mary I of England, marking the town’s place at the centre of national history.

Things to do in Framlingham

Visit Framlingham Castle

An aerial view of Framlingham Castle.

A visit to Framlingham Castle is the highlight of any trip to the town. One of the most memorable ways to experience it is to walk the castle walls as, unlike many castles, Framlingham doesn’t have a central keep, which means it has a striking curtain wall with 13 towers. Expect panoramic views over the Suffolk countryside and a bird's-eye view of the Mere below, followed by a delicious cream tea in the tea room, or a picnic on the castle meadow while watching the kids roll down the hills.

I visited on a bright and sunny spring day and would suggest allowing about 2 hours to explore the castle properly and to wear comfortable shoes for the wall walk. For optimal views, visit on a clear day. The castle also hosts a knights' tournament, which is held in August, where visitors can go back in time and get up close to the action as four armoured knights and their squires clash, which provides a fun family day out.

Browse the independent shops

Framlingham High Street on a blue sunny day.

Framlingham is loved for its collection of vibrant independent shops, which give the town its unique character and charm. Unlike larger towns filled with high street chains, Framlingham offers a more personal and authentic shopping experience where most businesses are locally owned and run. I suggest starting at the bottom of the high street near John Ball Blacksmith Gallery and wandering up to Market Hill to explore more shops.

My personal favourites are Collated, which is based at Framlingham Bookshop, a cosy bookshop perfect if you’re searching for your next read; Panorama, which is a colourful gift shop and emporium filled with unusual finds and amazing incense; and Boho & Blyth, which is a stylish boutique. There is also a number of other lovely finds, such as Callendar’s Florist, which deserves an honorary mention for its beautiful seasonal arrangements, and Two Magpies Bakery, which serves great coffee and delicious bakes.

Explore St Michael the Archangel Church

The 17th-century organ at St Michael's Church in Framlingham.

St Michael’s Church is one of the most important and historic churches in East Anglia. It is located right beside Framlingham Castle and is especially known for its magnificent Tudor tombs, including the burial site of Henry FitzRoy, who was the illegitimate son of King Henry VII.

The church has a huge chancel built as a family mausoleum, a decorated roof with intricate fan tracery, a rare 17th-century organ and medieval wall paintings. It is a must-visit due to its unique connection to Tudor royalty and nobility, and the church itself welcomes everyone to visit or join in any of its services.

Visit Framlingham market

Fresh vegetables on a stand outside a shop in Framlingham.

Framlingham Market dates back to the 13th century and takes place in the heart of the town. It has been a key part of local life for centuries, with the market helping shape the town into a thriving community. Today, the market takes place twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, with the mid-week market being smaller and more relaxed, and the weekend market being larger and busier with a wider variety of traders.

Expect to find local and artisan produce, including fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, fish, cheeses, baked goods and even homemade cakes. I visited on a Tuesday after a trip to the castle, and loved browsing through all of the stalls, such as the fishmongers who had lots of delicious fresh fish for sale, and the bakers selling delicious cakes and sausage rolls. A tip is to get there early, as the stalls begin packing up by mid-afternoon, so get there as early as you can.

Framlingham is a rich destination for nature lovers, combining beautiful countryside with some excellent wildlife-watching opportunities. The town is centred around open skies, rolling fields and peaceful green spaces with a plethora of beautiful walks perfect for spotting your favourite wildlife. The best place to go wildlife watching in Framlingham is Framlingham Mere, a 13.8-hectare wetland reserve right next to Framlingham Castle.

There are over 100-plus bird species recorded here, such as herons, swans, ducks, kingfishers, grebes and geese. There are also dragonflies in summer and many wildflowers. The mere is surrounded by meadows, trees and historic views with the castle reflecting on the water. Places to eat in Framlingham

Common Room Café | best for brunch

A delicious vegetarian meal at Common Room Cafe in Framlingham.

The Common Room Café is one of Framlingham’s most popular places to eat, loved for its atmosphere and food. It is tucked just off the Market Square and is set in a former club building and feels more like a relaxed social space than a typical café. Inside, there is quirky décor such as shelves of books and vinyl records playing music while you eat.

The café serves locally sourced, home-cooked breakfasts, brunches and lunches, with staples on the menu such as eggs Benedict, pancakes, hearty sandwiches and generous full English breakfasts. It’s a great place to have breakfast before a day exploring the town and visiting the castle. The owners of The Common Room said: “Framlingham is a great place to live and work, with plenty of independent restaurants & shops to visit, as well as the Castle on the Hill.”

Framlingham Fish Bar | best for takeaway

Fresh battered fish from Framlingham Fish Bar in Framlingham.

Framlingham Fish Bar is the town's go-to spot for a classic British takeaway. It is located just a short walk from the centre on College Road and serves up freshly cooked favourites, from golden-battered cod and haddock, battered sausages, pies, family-friendly options and, of course, their delicious crispy chips. It is particularly popular with locals, which gives it a friendly and down-to-earth feel, and is perfect for eating while sitting around the castle grounds or at the mere. My go-to order is a battered cod with crispy chips, scraps and of course a good amount of mushy peas and ketchup.

The owners of Framlingham Fish Bar said, “Framlingham has been my home for the past seven years, and after more than twelve years as a chef, I still love what I do every single day. Framlingham Fish Bar has proudly served this wonderful town for over 30 years, and it's a real privilege to continue that tradition. We see our customers as part of our family. Whether they're local residents, visitors from nearby villages, or people travelling from across the UK to explore Framlingham's beautiful castle and historic charm, we want everyone to feel genuinely welcome. Every meal we serve is prepared with care, quality ingredients, and genuine passion. We're proud to be part of this incredible community and grateful for the support we've received over the years”

The Crown Inn | best for a pub lunch

A delicious burger and onion rings from The Crown Inn in Framlingham.

Sitting proudly on top of Market Hill, The Crown Inn is a characterful pub in Framlingham that is steeped in history, dating back to the 13th-16th centuries. It is one of the towns most recognisable spots to eat, drink and unwind, and you can feel its history the moment you step inside with low beams, uneven floors and cosy corners that add to its unmistakable charm.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Crown Burger, which was served with cheese, chopped bacon, salad, homemade burger sauce, and crispy onion, all served in a brioche bun with skin-on fries. The service was really friendly, and it has a great selection of beer. There is also a cosy little courtyard to the rear, and seating at the front to look over the marketplace and take it all in.

Watson & Walpole | best for dinner

A chicken dinner with potatoes and vegetables from Watson & Walpole in Framlingham.

Watson & Walpole is a popular neighbourhood restaurant in Framlingham serving authentic Italian food that has earned its reputation for its handmade pasta, wood-fired oven, relaxed yet refined atmosphere and understated interiors. It is perfect for both a leisurely lunch and an intimate dinner, with the menu focusing on seasonality and local Suffolk produce, serving hearty Italian classics such as Tuscan sausage ragu, octopus gnocchi, bruschetta and more. I went for the ricotta and herb-stuffed tortelli with peas and broad beans, and it was absolutely delicious.

Behind Watson & Walpole is their Italian bar, which is open Thursday to Sunday at 6pm where you can enjoy wood-fired pizza, local beer, great cocktails, wines by the glass and a lovely range of alcohol-free drinks. They also own The Ice Cream Shop, open on weekends opposite the entrance to Framlingham Castle. It serves wonderful Lakenham Creamery ice cream in many flavours, such as raspberry and cream, butterscotch, pistachio and many more.

Framlingham walks

Framlingham Castle Circular

Framlingham College and the surrounding Suffolk countryside.

This amazing circular route is the most popular in Framlingham. Starting at Market Hill or Fore Street Car Park, it is an easy 2.5-mile loop that takes around 1 to 1.5 hours. The route passes the kissing gate to the Mere, where you will see amazing reflections of the castle across the water. It then passes the footbridges and runs parallel to the Framlingham College playing fields before looping back towards the town.

This walk is a really great way to experience the magic of Suffolk, with a mix of history and nature. I did this walk, and it is a relatively flat route that is suitable for a wide range of ages and abilities; however, there are sections that can get very muddy, so wear suitable footwear. There are plenty of places to eat, drink and relax in Framlingham, with plenty of chances to recharge along the journey.

  • Starting point: Fore Street Car Park, Fore Street, Framlingham, Suffolk, IP13 9DY
  • Difficulty: Easy

Framlingham Castle to Dennington Circular

A dusk evening view taken on a walk to Dennington near Framlingham.

This amazing 6.5-mile walk in Framlingham takes you past the castle and through the magical forests and fields to Dennington, a charming village adored for its picturesque countryside offering a glimpse into traditional English village life. Starting at Framlingham Castle, the route heads out northwards into the countryside and continues on to Dennington and returns back via a different countryside route, on the east side of Framlingham Mere.

The Framlingham to Dennington Circular walk is a well-signed route with plenty of opportunities to see wildlife on this walk; I encountered my fair share of squirrels and birds during the walk which was a lovely addition. It is a great dog-friendly route with plenty of open space for them to run and play, but please be aware that there is one stile where dogs need to be lifted over and some muddy stretches of path after heavy rain, so waterproof footwear is recommended. Be sure to visit The Deddington Queen, which is a great place to stop off for lunch and refuel before heading back to Framlingham.
