Things to Do in Orford

Orford’s most well-known attraction is its nature reserve, Orford Ness. Orford Ness is a sand and shingle spit that runs all the way along the coast up to Aldeburgh to the north. If you’re interesting in getting a better look at its unique geographical features then be sure to visit Orford Castle, from which you get an amazing view of the reserve. Orford Castle has been here since the eleventh century but the structure as it is now was originally built in the twelfth century for King Henry II and surprisingly still very intact. Now owned by English Heritage, a visit to the castle is a brilliant day out spent exploring its turrets, corridors and grounds.

Orford Ness is also home to one of the UK’s only Atomic Weapons Research Establishments, but don’t worry, it has been inactive for years so is risk free of explosions! It is currently the only testing site of its kind that remains open to the public in Britain and features two impressive pagoda test lands. The concrete pagoda structures were required due to the presence of detonator materials that could have very well caused an explosion. Filled with mystery and history, this is a fascinating local landmark that is well worth a visit while holidaying in Orford.

Orford is also somewhat of a food and drink paradise and has an abundance of varied independent eateries that will offer you a different delicacy for every day of your trip! For something truly unique, why not try The Lady Florence cruise restaurant? While dining on the water, you can tuck into breakfast, lunch, or dinner, or whilst taking in the beautiful views of the coast at Orford.

Pinney’s of Orford is a famous locally for its smoked salmon and owns both a restaurant and shop in the village where you can sample their fabulous range of seafood and smoked fish. For a sweet treat, head to Pump Street Bakery. Choose from their specialty Pump Street Chocolate, sandwiches, sausage rolls and pastries, or pick up a selection!

Less than half an hour from Orford you’ll find the picturesque riverside market town of Woodbridge, where we have a number of holiday cottages. Thorpeness is also just a short walk away and the beach here is a great alternative to Orford beach for dog walkers, as Orford has a seasonal dog ban while Thorpeness beach is pet friendly all year round.

With local history, great food, a fabulous beach and some of the most pretty and diverse stretches of landscape in Suffolk, a holiday in Orford offers it all.
