The Martello Boathouse sits within the grounds of the Martello Tower at Shingle Street, one in a chain of such towers built to defend the coast against Napoleon. The area is historic and beautiful. You’ll be just yards away from the beach and all rooms have interrupted views of Suffolk marshland. The tiny hamlet of Shingle Street spread out along the shingle ridge of Hollesley Bay, lies in an isolated position on the unspoilt Suffolk coast.  It is within an AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and is also an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) due to its wealth of rare coastal and salt marsh plant and birdlife, consequently, it is a haven for bird watchers.

This converted boat house is tastefully decorated a wonderful retreat for four. A wooden decking placed around the house, complete with outdoor furniture is quiet and secluded and leads onto the private garden. Summer evenings can be spent dining alfresco or enjoying a glass of wine in this great outdoor space. Both the sitting room area and two bedrooms have wonderful French doors that lead out onto the garden. The location of the boathouse was excellent, away from it all and extremely peaceful. There were easy walks from the property north and south and it was in easy reach of the attractions that part of Suffolk can offer. Sutton Hoo,castles at Orford and Framlington didn’t disappoint and further afield Lavenham,Snape and Aldeburgh were attractive and interesting. We also found Woodbridge and it’s river walks very pleasant. All in all a good place to stay in a beautiful area as close to the sea as is possible.

Mr C,

We loved The Boathouse. It was perfect for a wintery week of beautiful walks, & very cosy with the wood burning stove in the evening. It was so peaceful, & the views breathtaking. We watched roe deer from our window, & spotted so many different wild birds, & a hare.

Ms S,

A comfortable, well-appointed property in an unrivalled position on Shingle Street. Stunning walks on the doorstep. Fab for dog owners with a great secure garden.

Mrs M,
