A wealth of original beams, wood-panelled walls and traditional plaster pargeting: some of the wonderful period features of this splendid 16th-century house in the charming village of Orford. The historic property has ample space for eight guests and canine companions are also welcome. Orford has pretty cottages, dog-friendly pubs and a shingle beach, where your pets can run free. Traditional independent shops are moments away and Aldeburgh, with its thriving cultural scene, is within 10.5 miles.

A traditional, country interior and antique-style furniture enhance the appeal of this lovely old house and its spacious rooms. The living room has comfortable sofas, a cosy wood burner set in an impressive inglenook fireplace, and a separate dining area. There’s a breakfast table in the bright kitchen, while a snug/study offers a peaceful retreat. A fine wooden staircase leads to pair of magnificent four-poster bedrooms – a super-king-size and a double – with a shared dressing room. A twin bedroom and two bathrooms complete this floor, with steep stairs rising to a second twin bedroom. Outside, a large, shared garden has your own allocated area with seating and a BBQ, plus boat storage in the parking area.

Shop for tasty smoked fish at an old-established Orford family business or buy the fresh-caught variety sold on the quay. Explore medieval Orford Castle and climb to the roof to enjoy wonderful coastal views. Jump aboard a boat from the quay (dogs are welcome) for a cruise along the peaceful River Ore. The unspoiled landscape is a haven for wildlife, and you may spot resident seals. You can also catch a boat to isolated Orford Ness, once a top-secret military site, but now a National Nature Reserve. Charming Aldeburgh (10.5 miles) has art galleries, a cinema and the famous Snape Maltings cultural centre close by.

Old Brewery House was an ideal location for our family get together. It was comfortable, plenty of space but cosy as well and as my 5 year old granddaughter said, "it was awesome ". We really appreciated the generous welcome pack that the owner left us and Orford is a beautiful small village that has everything you need. We will return.

Fabulous cottage in a great location. This was our second visit and it was so lovely. Really spacious property (we were 7 with 2 dogs and it never felt cramped) with great furnishings and very well equipped.

The reason for not top marks across the board was that the lighting in the living areas was poor making reading in the evening inadequate for older people. no other complaints
