Description

Dating from the Napoleonic era, Cavalry Cottage provides an enchanting escape, a delightful, warm and welcoming holiday home. Situated on the Shotley Peninsula, just a short distance from the Suffolk coast, nestled in a quiet row of properties in the thriving village of Holbrook, Cavalry Cottage is a charming place from which to explore this beautiful part of the county.

The quaint porch offers a selection of books and storage space for walking boots or sailing shoes, should you wish to enjoy strolling the plentiful paths passing through the local countryside or take advantage of the facilities at the nearby Alton Water.

The front door opens on to a sitting room/dining area which centres around the traditional wood-burning stove. With a selection of comfortable seating, as well as a variety of books and DVDs, this relaxed and calming space is perfect every day throughout the changing seasons of the year. The front ‘stable’ door lets in a gentle breeze during the warmth of summer and the log fire creates a cosy and comforting retreat in winter: a perfect place to simply sit and unwind. At the rear, you'll find a family bathroom and the well-appointed kitchen, with a door leading out to a small passageway, used by the residents for access only. The staircase from the sitting room/diner leads up to the first floor, where you will find two well-equipped bedrooms. Although cute in size, these bedrooms have hanging and drawer storage, as well as a full-length mirror should you be heading out for a fun evening or special occasion. Another lovely addition is the garden. Crossed by a narrow pathway, you will find a small enclosed patio area to the front of the cottage and a generous lawned area just beyond. Both provide a pleasing sun-trap and are a great space to enjoy reading books and magazines, or dining al fresco.

Holbrook offers something for everyone. Thanks to its convenient location, you may find you can leave your car behind on most days during a stay at Cavalry Cottage. Just across the road is a well-stocked Co-op store, which opens from 6am–11pm six days a week and 10am–4pm on Sundays, and offers a wide selection of goods including seafood from Orford Ness, locally produced cheeses and in the winter months, environmentally friendly logs for the wood-burning stove (made from recycled coffee grounds). A selection of beers from local brewers Adnams, and wines and spirits from all over the world are available. Woody’s Butchers a few yards away from Cavalry cottage specialises in meat from nearby countryside farms. If you're longing for a 'holiday' from cooking, however, the village also has two excellent, historic pubs close by. The Swan and The Compasses Inn offer restaurant dining, home cooking and real ale; The Compasses also provides a takeaway menu.

Of course, a short drive will also take you to a selection of other Suffolk villages with local pubs bursting with character. These include the 17th century Butt and Oyster on the river at Pin Mill (4.8 miles) the renowned Boot at Freston (2.3 miles) the Red Lion at Chelmondiston (4.4 miles) and the Shipwreck in Shotley (7.6 miles).

Driving alongside the banks of River Orwell under the famous Orwell Bridge will take you to the historic county town of Ipswich with its spectacular waterfront, historic Christchurch Mansion and Park, award winning restaurants, well known and independent shops.

Cavalry Cottage is also in a prime spot for exploring. A fantastic array of footpaths are just waiting to be discovered; why not plan your walking routes ahead online, or you could simply borrow one of the provided Ordnance Survey maps at the cottage. A real must is a visit to Alton Water Park. Covering 400 acres, including a man-made reservoir, you can take part in a number of activities including cycling (4 mile and 8 mile course available, as well as cycle hire), walking, fishing and watersports to name but a few, all within a 5 minute drive or 20 minute walk from Cavalry Cottage.
