Suffolk becomes a winter wonderland over this festive period. Fireworks light up the skies, and there's not a better time to wrap up warm and go for a bracing walk through the beautiful Suffolk countryside.

There is so much going on in Suffolk at this time of year, from poetry festivals to Christmas fairs. Suffolk really is the ideal place to get away from it all and relax before the start of the New Year. See our November and December events below...

 

Aldeburgh Documentary Festival

Aldeburgh Documentary Festival

The Aldeburgh Documentary Festival returns for its 24th year with a fantastic line up at Aldeburgh Cinema. Showcasing screenings of highly acclaimed and many topical documentaries, the cinema will be brought to life by panels of very special guests who are all a credit to the industry. A firework display plus so much more, Heveningham Hall Fireworks is a spectacular evening. Not only will you enjoy an amazing firework display by Full Effect Fireworks, but you’ll also be entertained by a huge bonfire, a traditional funfair, two fully licensed bars, fish & chips, hog roast, BBQ and lots of tasty local food. Along with all of this, they’ll be some great live music to bop around too and warm you joints including performances by the well-known British pop group the Noisettes, The Vagaband and a talented Queen tribute, One Night of Queen. Tickets go by vehicles or pedestrians and are available via the Heveningham Hall website or on the gate. Gates open at 16:30.

Christchurch Park Fireworks

A musical firework display extravaganza, Christchurch Park Fireworks have put on amazing firework displays year after year, all with a carefully selected stream of music which their fireworks explode in the night's sky in time to. Opening at 6 pm, you can enjoy the funfair, catering and bars which will be on-site, along with a selection of live music on three different stages which kicks off at 6:45. Be sure not to miss the smooth sounds of Soul Kitchen on the main stage at 7. The fireworks will kick off at 8 pm, so whether you get there early or late, there’s plenty of time to enjoy all that the evening has to offer, which the park closing at 10 pm.

A wonderful family friendly event at Jubilee Park, not far from Woodbridge, Rendleshem Firework Display will be hosting a funfair and firework show by Kimbolton Fireworks. A free event, although donations are welcome, teas, coffee and hot chocolate will be supplied by Rendleshem Scouts ensuring people are kept nice and warm along with some yummy sweet treats. Food will be provided by some fantastic local organisations including The Wandering Grill, East Suffolk’s premier burger van and Wood Fired Pizza Paella. Once fed and watered, grab your glowsticks from Friends of Rendleshem School and enjoy the display at 06:30.

Felixstowe Firework Spectacular

Time: Gates open 4.30 pm & display takes place at 6.30 pm. The 10th event of its kind, Felixstowe Firework Spectacular will take place at Felixstowe and Walton United Football Club and is set to be their biggest and best display yet. Not only will punters be thrilled by the impressive display which starts at 6:30, but they’ll also have performances from ‘Night Flight’ aerial display team and ‘Fireflow’ Fire Show to wow their vision. A great night out for the whole family including a funfair, entertainment, BBQ, pizza and much more.

A firework seaside spectacular, A Fireworks Display will take place on King's Field Aldeburgh from 5 pm onwards. A lantern parade will bring in Guy Fawkes along with food stalls and entertainment. A free event, however, donations are welcome which will go towards the cost of the event.

Each November Ways With Words runs a literature festival in Southwold – where better to host this event than a town which has been so loved by so many different writers! The festival makes an ideal escape from the stress and strain of daily life, a time to engage with books and ideas in the most comfortable of settings.

Put together by Project Seven, a wonderful organisation that helps local charities and events, The Big Night Out in Long Melford will be displaying one of the largest bonfire and firework displays around. Carefully choreographed and staged by Pains Fireworks, you’ll want a front row seat to this awesome display which features the latest from the pyrotechnic industry for a whopping thirty minutes to the backdrop of a ginormous bonfire. Alongside the bonfire and fireworks, there will be a large fairground with many rides and lots of food and drink outlets including a BBQ by Project Seven. All proceeds will go to local charities, and tickets are available to buy from local shops or on the gate.

Woodbridge Choral Society - Britten: War Requiem

Britten’s masterful and emotional score derives its extraordinary power from the combination of the immortal words of the Mass for the Dead with the unforgettable poetry of Wilfred Owen. There will be a pre-concert talk at 6.30 pm in the Concert Hall, presented by Chris Milton, Director of Music, Woodbridge School. Chris is an authority on the War Requiem and previously worked at the Britten-Pears Foundation. Call the box office on 01728 687110 to book your ticket. The concert starts at 19:30.

We Are Handmade Christmas Craft Fair

<strong>Saturday 17th November 2018</strong><p>Taking place over four rooms from 10 - 4 in The Old School, Long Melford, this event will offer shoppers a wonderful choice of beautifully designed and handcrafted gifts for Christmas. Makers will be showcasing the latest in contemporary and vintage inspired handmade items. Stallholders include Capricorn Crafts, makers of wooden toys and gifts; Honeybee Natural Beauty; Driftwood Designs; Woodturner Glyn Hall; Dolly Mixtures Glass and Nanuk Jewellery. A full list of makers will be on www.wearehandmade.co.uk nearer the event. Norah from Fantasia Textiles will be demonstrating various textile techniques throughout the day, and we also have Sandra Hall Ceramics who’ll be demonstrating her work. Visitors can sit down and enjoy some delicious homemade cakes with a cup of tea, all served in lovely vintage style crockery, courtesy of Plum Fairy who will be running the tearoom. This event is free to attend.

Beccles Beer Festival

The ever-popular Autumn Beccles Beer Festival is now in its 7th year raising funds for community projects. Where: Beccles Public Hall. Visit Beccles this November and join in the celebration of local real ales, cider and lagers from 22 breweries all within 30 miles of Beccles. There will be live music, food stalls and soft drinks for drivers. Christmas Wreath Making at Ickworth House

Visit Ickworth House this November and learn how to make your own festive wreath in this workshop. There will be a demonstration and materials are provided to make your own. Please do bring your own gloves and secateurs. Also available during the day are refreshments, two course lunch, afternoon tea and cake. A great opportunity to make something unique for your front door. Tickets are £30, book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Sleeping Beauty - Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds

A great play for all the family to enjoy in one of the most popular theatres in Suffolk and one of the best-loved stories of all time. As a newborn baby Aurora was cursed by the evil fairy Carabosse. On the day of her 16th birthday, Aurora will prick her finger on a spinning wheel and die! Will Nanny Fanny, King Edmund and Grub the kitchen boy be able to protect the unsuspecting princess? Will Fairy Fortune find a way to defeat her sister, the wicked Carabosse? And what part does the dashing Prince Florin have to play? Reydon Christmas Lights Switch On

Reydon Christmas Lights Switch on will include traditional carols, Christmas lights, the blessing of the crib and nativity figures which have featured every December on Reydon Corner for over 45 years. In recent years the committee has been able, due to the generosity of local people, fund decorations, trees and lights in other village locations. The switch on night is always very well supported and in recent years has included the Southwold firemen escorting father Christmas to the event, The Helen Price Handbell ringers and the village choir - Music Vox.

Christmas Fair at Clare

The Clare Christmas Fair hosted at St. Peter and St. Paul's Church is a great chance to get some Christmas shopping completed in the centre of town. This event will showcase a selection of gifts, decorations, crafts and Christmas produce. Sip a glass of something warm whilst you take a look at items such as jewellery, cakes, dolls, pottery, artwork and more. Refreshments will be available as well as Christmas carol performances.

Felixstowe Christmas Lights Switch On & Fair

Get into the festive spirit by joining in the fun at Felixstowe's Xmas Lights Switch On and Xmas Craft market. Hamilton Road and The Canopy will be filled with lots of festive food and craft stalls and there will be carol singing and live entertainment throughout the afternoon.

Christmas at Africa Alive!

Special festive times at Africa Alive. Children can enjoy the thrill of meeting Santa in his grotto whilst also receiving a fantastic gift and visit the Discovery Centre for Christmas Crafts and Festive Face Painting. A visit to Santa is £5.95 in addition to the entry fee. The grotto will be open from 11 am - 3 pm each day.

Robin Hood - The Quay Theatre, Sudbury

A great pantomime for all the family to enjoy brought to you by the Sudbury Dramatic Society. This year's Pantomime is the story of Robin Hood. Robin and his Merry Men need HELP to foil the dastardly plans of the Wicked Sheriff of Nottingham and his Evil Mother. Tickets are £12 and £9 for under 16s.

From 10 - 4, Snape Maltings will host their Christmas Farmers Market where there will be lots of local produce, storytelling and Christmas craft making. This Christmas market, like the Aldeburgh Food & Drink Festival, is famous for its friendliness and unsurpassed variety of high-quality local products, many of which have been produced exclusively for the Christmas Market. You will find a wonderful array of delicious food and drink which will make your Christmas truly special. There is something for everyone – even Christmas treats for your dog!

Christmas at Blackthorpe Barn

Various dates throughout November and December 2018. Blackthorpe Barn in Bury St Edmunds was built in 1550 and is a beautiful, historic building that hosts an abundance of Christmas events. This year they will be creating Santa's Grotto which will be open on weekends from the 24th of November to the 22nd of December plus the 19th, 20th, and 21st December. Children will love meeting Santa as they take their token into the grotto and receive their present. The barn will also be hosting a string of craft shows where they showcase the very best of British craftsmanship on weekends leading up to Christmas from the 11th of November. At the barns, you can also have a look around the Country Christmas Shop, take part in some Christmassy workshops and purchase some natural decorations and a live Christmas Tree.

Felixstowe Christmas Dip

Christmas Day 2018

This fun Christmas Day event raises money for local charities. This will be the 15th Christmas Day Dip for St Elizabeth Hospice and it’s gathering quite a following. Around 500 dippers take part each year and see this as the traditional start to their Christmas Day festivities. This year, the Mayor of Felixstowe will be doing the dip and is excited to be involved! Early bird registration is open at £8pp. Visit Event Brite for more information.
