Dating back to 1650, Friars Retreat is a Grade II listed and charming self-catering holiday cottage located in the heart of Sudbury on the south Suffolk border, making this holiday cottage perfect for couples or families looking to explore Sudbury and Suffolk’s historic villages and towns. Friars Retreat retains attractive character beams and period features throughout. The modernised, fully-equipped kitchen offers guests all they need for their self-catering experience. The cosy sitting room is a lovely space for entertaining, intimate dinner parties or simply relaxing with your loved ones. A staircase leads to the first floor with two bedrooms which retain their history with the original beams. The family bathroom is beautifully presented with the added benefit of a large walk-in shower cubicle and bath.
Only a short walk from Friars Retreat is the town centre which has a market on a Thursday and Saturday. The town has a good selection of pubs, cafes, shops and restaurants. Quay Lane (at the side of Friars Retreat) has a cricket ground which is very popular in summer where one can sit and enjoy a lazy afternoon of cricket. The small Quay Theatre (a few minutes’ walk) has a bar and a variety of entertainment throughout the year - well worth a visit. Shop (supermarket): 600 yards Pub: 50 yards.

Perhaps Sudbury’s main claim to fame is that it is the birthplace of the famous portrait and landscape artist Thomas Gainsborough. His birthplace now forms Gainsborough House Museum and Gallery. The town’s water meadows inspired Gainsborough and Suffolk's other famous landscape artist John Constable. This bustling market town has many well-known and independent shops with plenty of restaurants and cafes. Walks along the old railway line are well used and a walk/cycle ride to Long Melford for lunch is a must for those of a fitter constitution. The beautiful villages of Lavenham, Cavendish and Clare lie a little further afield. Constable Country, Bury St Edmunds and Colchester are all within easy reach by car (the latter by train also, via the attractive Gainsborough Branch Line). Sedate trips along the River Stour to the Henny Swan for a weekend lunch shouldn’t be missed (Apr – Oct).

Beautifully and sympathetically restored property with every modern convenience. Pristine beds, linens and towels; immaculate kitchen and bathroom. Even the (complimentary) shower gel was colour co-ordinated! The attention to detail was most impressive.Ms Sue Atkinson - 26th February 2018
