A charming holiday cottage in the very heart of the Suffolk countryside. A fusion of period features and contemporary living, close to the coast.

Marlborough House Forge has been completely renovated by the owners to provide a luxurious couples bolt-hole just a short drive from the bustling market towns of Framlingham and Woodbridge and the picturesque Suffolk coastline. As the name suggests, the cottage was formerly the village forge and many of its original features have been incorporated into the design including the original bellows. The ground floor accommodation offers everything you could wish for in your self catering holiday home with cosy and stylish interiors. From the private parking area, a path through the enclosed garden leads to the front door. Step inside and the interiors are bright and welcoming with an open plan living area complete with pretty window seat, well equipped kitchen and beautiful master bedroom and contemporary shower room. The property overlooks fields, a beautiful spot whatever the season - with misty horizons in the winter, rotating summer crops and the most amazing sunrises and sunsets.

Framlingham is a fascinating market town with an impressive 12th-century curtain-walled castle, which still dominates the town. Be sure to stop off for lunch or dinner, there are some excellent cafes, pubs and restaurants in the town. Alternatively, head to Southwold for a day on the beach, stroll along the prom and enjoy some of the best fish and chips!

Pubs in Earl Soham, Framlingham 4 miles, Woodbridge 10 miles, Aldeburgh 9 miles, Orford 12 miles, Southwold 18 miles.

Reviews

Beautiful character property in the heart of the countryside and just a short drive to local amenities.

Mrs C,

Great to be back in Suffolk and revisit some of the places we love. The Forge has been a very comfortable base for us, beautiful attention to detail which we really appreciate and so warm and clean. Always a winner when you arrive to cream tea as well! We've had a fabulous week, slightly mixed bag weather wise but didn't stop us getting out and about. We leave feeling refreshed and ready to take on the joys of summer. Many thanks.

Paul and C,

A first ever visit to Suffolk for us - what a great place. So much to do and so many paths and routes to walk. Activities that were made so much nicer knowing we would come back to such a fabulous cottage. So clean, warm and welcoming. Thank you for the scones and flowers such a treat! The Dunwich area, Sutton Hoo and Lavenham will remain highlights for us but we will also carry home memories of stepping out of the Forge in fading evening light to enjoy the dimming sky, watching the hare and the muntjac and just enjoying the peace. Thank you so much.

Brian and J,

Mega wonderful!! What a place, absolutely superb! Lovely location, beautiful countryside, great to hear the birds in the morning. The Forge is like home - everything you could wish for. The fruit scones were a fabulous welcome treat. We both enjoyed our break especially as we work in a hospital and a residential home. It's been hard work these 2 years. So good here, hope to come back.

Luke and J,

What a lovely stay we've had! Very clean, comfy and cosy cottage and Cathy and Peter have made us feel very welcome. Beautiful area and perfect cottage to explore it from, especially if like us you enjoyed the TV series 'The Detectorists'! Look forward to our next visit!

Ken and R,

We had had a really lovely stay in your beautiful cottage. It was a really great find for a much needed break! We have not visited the East Coast before so it was a great base for us to explore the area. We enjoyed being able to sit in the lounge and look at the view. Maybe we will visit again when it is warm enough to sit outside! We were delighted with the welcome tray what a super surprise. Thank you so much.

Neil and N,

Very enjoyable break. Thank you for the use of your lovely cotage. Suffolk was delightful. Hopefully returning soon.

John and L,

What a fabulous place to stay! After a lunch stop in Framlingham en route (Dancing Goat) we arrived at the property and within 15 minutes we were sat on the terrace with afternoon cream tea! The Forge is perfect for a relaxing and comfortable stay, lovely property and great location. We have really enjoyed our time here and feel ready to face 'reality' once again...Until next time. Many thanks.

Roy and H,

The Forge provides a beautiful little escape for two. It is presented so well, faultlessly clean, warm and cosy with lovely rural views. Also very private but owners just next door if needed. We love a property with abit of history and this one doesn’t disappoint. Perfect base for exploring Suffolk.

Mrs F,

Cottage immaculate with everything one might need. Thank you for the lovely welcome tray. Loved having breakfast and looking out the stable door watching pheasants running around. Delightful bird song, watched the sun come up and on Sunday had the excitement of seeing the equinox moon come up. Had a very nice lunch at the Mill House with a 7.2 mile walk on the Saturday! Outside seating area looks lovely but too parky currently! Would definitely return!

Clive and L,

The two of us enjoyed a wonderful mini break at this beautiful cottage in Saxtead. It was close to must see places such as Sutton Hoo and Framlingham Castle. The owners were so friendly and helpful and the cottage was very comfortable and clean. All I can add is that it was delightful and we wouldn't say no to living there! The Old Mill House pub, a lovely 17th century building is about a 5 mins drive away and served lovely meals some of which were extremely large. Put Marlborough House Forge on your wishlist, it is wonderful. 10/10

Mrs W,

Excellent cottage really nice hosts 10 out of 10

Mr W,

Stunningly beautiful property, sympathetically converted from old forge (the before and after pictures are wonderful). Clean, well appointed and comfortable in all respects and the location was so peaceful - slept like a log all week. Lots of interesting attractions to visit within half an hour of the Forge and a plethora of quality places to eat nearby.

Mr R,

What a wonderful little cottage. Everything had been thought of for the comfort of guests. Holiday cancelled a few times because of dreaded Covid but so glad we perservered. It was certainly worth it. Welcome tray was so thoughtful.

Diana and R,

We have revelled in our week at the fantastic, fabulous Forge. Lovely country setting. Lived up to our expectations. Our hosts were very helpful. Very comfortable and clean.

Alan and D,

Lovely stay in warm, clean and comfortable cottage. Many places to visit within easy drive. The week has just flown by. Would love to see the area in Summer. Thanks to Cathy and Peter who have been friendly and helpful.

Mr M,

We have enjoyed a very relaxing few days exploring Suffolk – so much to enjoy. The cottage has everything anyone might need and we were especially grateful for the lovely welcome tray on arrival after a tiring journey. The weather has been amazing and we shall forever picture Suffolk in hot sunshine with perfect blue skies. Thank you to Cathy and Peter for such warm hospitality.

Hazel & C,

We have had the most wonderful relaxing break. Thank you Cathy and Peter for your wonderful cottage, attention to detail is second to none. We really enjoyed your gorgeous scones on arrival! The cottage is very comfortable and extremely clean. We didn’t venture very far but enjoyed days in Southwold, Aldeburgh and Snape and we have enjoyed walks in the lanes nearby too. Thank you for your superb hospitality, I hope we can return.

Neil & A,

We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay in your delightful cottage. Warm, cosy and beautifully presented. We also loved the welcome tray which was a lovely treat on our arrival. We had the eggs for breakfast on the patio!! It was very relaxing sitting in the garden enjoying the peace and quiet of the countryside. Thank you for a wonderful holiday. We look forward to returning and exploring more of the Suffolk countryside. Warm and friendly hosts and the added bonus of a firm bed !

Kay & G,

Thank you for a lovely stay. Nothing I would change about the accommodation. Hope to return soon.

Michelle & A,

A lovely relaxing week stay in The Forge was just what the doctor ordered. This beautiful cottage is very well appointed, clean and with lovely rural countryside it was easy to unwind. The week was spent walking, cycling and visiting local sites. Excellent hosts all helped to make this a lovely memorable stay. Many thanks.

Sean & S,

We really enjoyed our second visit to The Forge. The cottage is great and best bit for us is having breakfast on the patio looking over the fields and taking in the unspoilt views. Perhaps next time we might actually get to see the combine harvester in action !!!

Steve & S,

Our third visit to Suffolk but we found a gem choosing to stay at The Forge. After a long journey we were very grateful for the delicious welcome tray. A lovely relaxing break with home form home comforts and a great base to explore the beautiful Suffolk beaches and countryside. After a very stressful few months this was just the break that we needed. Thank you for a great stay and we hope to return in the future.

Stewart & T,

Thank you very much for a wonderful stay at The Forge and the lovely welcome tray. The Forge was really cosy and the bed exceptionally comfortable. Our first visit to Suffolk and we really loved the wonderful countryside and had some great days out. Beautiful area, superb cottage and we had an amazing week and hopefully will visit again soon.

Corinne & D,

Thank you we have had a really lovely stay. Loved all the little touches including the flowers and scones. Beautifully renovated property. Enjoyed looking through previous reviews and consequently had a lovely walk along Covehythe beach – no one else there ! Also Helmingham Hall gardens. Hope to be back soon !

Deb & D,

We have had a wonderful time here, The cottage is done up beautifully and the garden is a little sun trap. Great base for getting about, to the coast and Ipswich etc. We had some great meals at the Dennington Queen thank you for the recommendation.

Karen & K,

It has been lovely to meet you Cathy and your little dog. To arrive and find scones etc awaiting us was a lovely touch. Your cosy cottage has made us feel at home. Overall excellent.

Bill & G,

We have really enjoyed our stay in this delightful part of Suffolk helped enormously by the fantastic late summer weather. The cottage is beautifully presented and well equipped, clean and very comfortable. The welcome tray was a very thoughtful touch and much appreciated. We particularly enjoyed cycling our tandem on the well signposted cycle routes..

Richard & R,

This property was first class, exceptionally well maintained and extremely clean. We had a very enjoyable time at The Forge and the owners thought of every detail to make our stay perfect. On arrival there were scones and jam and also a bottle of wine and the flowers were an added touch. We will certainly return.

Mr C,

Lovely converted forge, small enclosed garden. Saxtead is a small village with no shops, nearest is Framingham 3 mile drive. Well placed for Dunwich,Thorpeness and Aldeburgh 30 minute drive. A great place to stay.

Mrs W,

After nearly 14 months of chaos and mayhem a much needed break and respite has been more than provided for with our stay at The Forge. From first opening the door and seeing the Welcome Tray and flowers and obvious impeccable standards of cleanliness we relaxed. The cottage is warm, cosy inviting and very comfortable. It is our first visit to Suffolk and sadly the short stay has meant we have only managed to explore a few of the many opportunities around here. We hope to return to enjoy the many walks directly from the cottage and have more time to really recharge in these beautiful surroundings- maybe just stop a while and contemplate from the patio !! We have also been celebrating a milestone anniversary and your hospitality has helped make possible a special time and memorable break. We very much look forward to returning to The Forge. Thank you very much.

Andrew & L,

Thank you Cathy, our holiday started as soon as we walked into The Forge. Such a warm welcoming atmosphere. We have not been to Suffolk before and have thoroughly enjoyed our week here. All in all a beautiful place to escape and recharge batteries when you have a busy home life.

Karen & R,

Thank you so much for a lovely stay. The Forge is so welcoming and comfortable – a real home from home. And the scones and jam etc were a lovely surprise when we arrived. As our first stay away from home for many months we could not have wanted more – everything so clean and well presented. Fabulous places to visit including Covehithe, Helmingham Hall Gardens and many more. Hope to be back again before too long !

Cath & N,

Many many thanks Cathy. We have had a wonderful holiday. The Forge was perfect – a really, really comfortable bed, everything we could want in terms of convenience, the cottage was wonderfully warm at night plus a lovely shower. We have had a lovely time, Cathy you have been the perfect host to make our stay complete. Once again many, many thanks.

Janet & R,

We had a wonderful stay here at the Forge, a beautifully presented cottage with everything we could have wished for. Lots of time to enjoy this part of beautiful Suffok – our first visit. We enjoyed the wildlife, excellent sighting of birds both coastal and inland. Thank you for the extra touches and lovely home baked scones, flowers etc. Hope to visit again.

Mark & A,

We would endorse all the other rave reviews of this property. Beautifully restored, comfortable, well equipped and yes the bed was wonderful ! Excellent coastal walks and meals out.

Mandy & M,

Thank you so much, we have had a really lovely time. You have thought of everything you need for a home from home. We enjoyed some lovely lazy evening sitting in the garden in the sunshine taking in the view. We had great days out including Framlingham Castle, Jimmys Farm, Adnams Brewery tour, Orford, Southwold and Eye. Overall a wonderful relaxing holiday with great hosts. Thanks again.

Morag and P,

A perfect home from home. Lovely accommodation in a beautiful setting. Very clean throughout and everything you need for a relaxing holiday.

Mrs De L,

An exceptionally well appointed cottage, with quality fitments, spotlessly clean and with a really comfortable bed. In an excellent, quiet location for local walks the cottage has mid-point access to all of Suffolk's coastal attractions. Cathy, as host, ensured that we had everything we needed for a wonderful holiday.
