Clare Priory

One of the oldest religious houses in England, Clare Priory was established in 1248 at the invitation of Richard de Clare. The Priory was the first house of the Augustinian Friars in England but following its suppression in 1538, passed through many hands and uses until it was finally purchased by the Augustinian Friars in 1953. Today, Clare Priory acts as a Parish and as a Retreat Centre with many visitors to The Shrine of Our Lady, Mother of Good Counsel which is housed in one of the oldest parts of The Priory. Only recently an extension was added onto the church to contain the growing congregation; in May 2015, the new building won RICS East of England Project of the Year Award.
