Abbey Gardens

  • Angel Hill, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, IP33 1LS

Established in 1020, the Benedictine abbey at Bury St Edmunds was one of the richest and most powerful Benedictine monasteries in the country. The remains of the abbey are found in the Abbey Gardens which are located in the heart of the town. The remains include the 14th century Great Gate and Norman Tower and suggest it was an impressive structure. In 1214 the abbey was the site of a historic meeting between King John and his dissatisfied earls and barons, as a direct result of which the Magna Carta was sealed at Runnymede the following year.
