BBC Singers Concert St Edmund’s Church Southwold - Broadcast Live

Written by Laura Wharton on

To celebrate the Britten Centenary Weekend, there will be a BBC Singers concert at St Edmund’s Church in Field Stile Road, Southwold on Sunday 24th November 2013. This concert will be broadcast live on Radio 3.

The Suffolk-born composer's birthday fell on St Cecilia’s Day and Britten had a strong desire to write a piece of music in praise of St Cecilia’s Day - Patron Saint of Music. Therefore "Hymn to St Cecilia” features on Sunday's programme:-

Britten Hymn to St Cecilia; Choral Dances from Gloriana; Prelude and Fugue on a theme of Vittoria; A Shepherd’s Carol; Rejoice in the Lamb
Bridge Music when soft voices die
Purcell Jehova quam multi sunt hostes; I was Glad
Ireland Ex ore innocentum

Conductor: David Hill
Organ: Iain Farrington

This is a free event but advance booking is essential by calling the Aldeburgh Music box office.
