A fascinating seaside village built in the 1920s by Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie , an architect, barrister, playwright and good friend of J.M.Barrie the author of Peter Pan. The mock Tudor style buildings are now the hallmark of Thorpeness where the amenities include the popular Dolphin Inn with great beers and food , the Thorpeness Hotel with its 18 hole golf course , the Thorpeness Country Club with social facilities, children's club in school holidays and a thriving tennis facility and The Meare - a large shallow boating lake that is a recreation of the Peter Pan story. Close by the Meare are both traditional tea rooms and also a more contemporary Kitchen & Bar establishment housed in the same building as the renowned Thorpeness Emporium. Thorpeness also has "The House in the Clouds" and it's own fully renovated Windmill. The beaches are mainly shingle and behind the village is a myriad of footpaths over heath and common land. Where else might you find the proposition of a lovely, attractive and friendly village bordered on one side by the North Sea and the Meare on the other ? We think it is Unique. Just a short walk along a seaside footpath will take you to Aldeburgh, home of the Aldeburgh Festival and the Freud Summer Theatre, where there are several excellent restaurants, pubs and lovely shops and fresh fish sold on the beach, as well as a fascinating museum, boating lake, sailing and yacht club
