Things to Do in Snape

Snape Maltings is a collection of Victorian industrial buildings on the banks of the River Alde in the village that is the culture and events centre in Snape. Home to the famous Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Snape Maltings hosts a number of live shows throughout the year, but its complex of buildings are also home to a number of independent shops, eateries and exhibitions. A particular highlight has to be the outdoor tipi which serves pizza and drinks, perfect for an afternoon chilling in the sun.

There’s also lots of interesting local history to discover around Snape. If you pop over to Leiston your time will be well spent at the Long Shop Museum. Previously known as the “Leiston Works” the Long Shop was a thriving factory from the 1700’s until the 1930’s as a significant UK producer of steam locomotives and engineered works. Today this building is a fascinating museum dedicated to UK industrial and social heritage.

There are several exhibits to take a look at including artefacts and curios which once belonged to the Leiston Works founders - the Garrett family. There are steam engines, horse drawn vehicles and carts, domestic wares, exhibits from Sizewell B, and remnants from a local WW1 Zeppelin crash site. There are also plenty of hands on exhibits for children to enjoy.

Being in an AONB, there are a number of beautiful local walks to enjoy around Snape too. One of our favourites has to be the walk from the River Alde up to Iken Cliffs, a popular picnic spot with amazing views of the unusual marshland that makes this stretch of Suffolk unlike anywhere else in the country.

Snape is also very close to Aldeburgh, Orford, Framlingham and a number of other popular Suffolk towns and villages, making it a great place to have a holiday filled with day trips to new and different places. So if you’re looking for somewhere by the sea with a cultural twist, look no further than our Snape holiday cottages.
