Our Top Tips for a Successful Self-Catering Holiday
A stay in a self-catering holiday cottage is such a great way to holiday: space for everyone and complete freedom to come and go as you please. No set meal times, no menus or itineraries. It’s no wonder cottage holidays are becoming more and more popular.
If you’ve never stayed in a holiday cottage before or haven’t done for a while, here’s our top tips to get the most out of your stay and ensure that things go smoothly.
Bring the Essentials
Self-catering is just what is says, so whilst you will be provided with a few bits and pieces to get you started, you’ll need to bring all the essentials with you. That means toilet roll, bin bags, cling film or foil, washing detergent etc.
If you’re planning on cooking lots during your stay, don’t forget the condiments, herbs and spices, stock cubes and cooking oil etc. Your kitchen will be well-equipped with all the necessary gadgets and appliances and you’ll have crockery and cutlery for as many guests as the property accommodates.
Make Arrival Day Easy
Let’s face it, whether you’re driving for an hour or five, sometimes car journeys can be challenging, so make sure you’ve got your arrival arrangements sorted out.
Check your check in time. In most cases, check in time is 4pm. Whilst during quieter months it may be possible to access your holiday accommodation early, we regret that we cannot offer early check ins during peak season, so plan your journey times accordingly.
It’s always a good idea to have your first evening meal planned. Maybe prepare a meal that can be reheated when you arrive, or why not place an online grocery delivery for your holiday cottage (for after 4pm, of course). Don’t forget the wine and something yummy for breakfast too.
You’ll receive your travel details seven days before your holiday and key safe/collection details 48 hours prior to arrival. You’ll also be sent details of who to contact in an emergency. Do take a few minutes to read through this information before you set off.
In the event of an out of hours issue on arrival day we’re here to help via our emergency line, but we do ask you to politely consider whether or not it is an ‘emergency’ before you call.
Be a Local
Suffolk is blessed with many glorious local food producers so make the most of your stay make sure you visit the local farmers markets and frequent the local cafes, restaurants and shops.
We recommend ditching your four-wheeled transport as much as possible and get out and about on foot, by bike or even by boat to see the highlights of our heavenly county.

Know Your Stuff To Avoid Hiccups
Make sure that you’re clued up on what your chosen holiday property offers - full details are on our website. Linen and towels are generally provided, but are not changed during your stay unless you request a mid-stay clean. If you’re planning a trip to the beach, you’ll need to provide your own beach towels. Cots, high chairs and stair gates are only provided where specified on the website. If you’ve booked accommodation where rooms can be set up as either double or twin, make sure that you’ve specified in advance.
