Explore the Suffolk Coast and Heaths
Situated south of our Aldeburgh holiday homes, on the opposite side of the River Alde, is the fascinating and remote shingle spit of Orford Ness, the largest in Europe! From Orford quay you can take a boat trip to this wild shingle spit and follow trails through this internationally important nature reserve spread with unusual debris and forgotten buildings.
Tucked away on the Suffolk coast, off the B1125, near our Sandlings holiday homes, Dunwich Heath offers visitors a beautiful area of nature and wildlife to explore. This rare habitat is fantastic for keen birdwatchers too, and is home to the Dartford warbler, nightjar, woodlark, ant-lion, adder and more. This stunning landscape alone is inspiring and from July to September the heath is covered in colour!
RSPB events on the Suffolk coast, September 2010 to March 2011.
From our Sandlings cottages you can head to RSPB Minsmere. Set between Southwold and Aldeburgh in the Sandlings area is this popular RSPB reserve, a great location for those who enjoy birdwatching and varied nature trails. In the spring you can see avocet, marsh harriers and booming bitterns and a special area of the beach is cordoned off to protect nesting little terns. Wading birds, swans, ducks and geese visit in the autumn and winter too. Visitors can also head to the centre here to find out more about the area, wildlife and enjoy the tearoom and shop. All through the year there are events here and families can take advantage of the great explorer backpacks and trail booklets!
