Isabel's Favourite Place - Walberswick
I recommend Walberswick as one of my favourite holiday destinations in the Southwold area.We have been going to this gorgeous little seaside village for over 20 years and my children all love it. This is an ideal holiday spot for families, the beaches are long and sandy and never feel crowded even in the high season. The village has a safe and friendly atmosphere, there are swings and a slide on the picturesque village green surrounded by lovely cottages and gift shops. There are 2 pubs, cafes and cycle hire available.
One of the most important things to mention is the crabbing, an essential part of any holiday in Walberswick, there are 2 bridges by the main car park that are the favourite haunt of all children, just pop a crabbing line over the side with a piece of bacon/fish head, whatever is your preferred bait and see what happens. An average haul of 20 crabs in 10 minutes is quite usual, so remember to bring a large bucket to put them in and they are not edible, just pop them back in at the end and they obligingly will be there to be to be fished again the next day. There is an annual crabbing competition in Walberswick in August which often has media coverage and normally a celebrity to give away the prizes. It is a well known secret that there are plenty of celebrities with holiday cottages here, you never know who you may bump into, I am giving away no names.
For those who love walking, Walberswick National Nature Reserve is a truly unique example of a forgotten landscape, the heath and marshes are teeming with wildlife and plants. How about a walk to Dunwich partly on the marshes and along the beach, a drink in the pub in Dunwich and then a leisurely stroll back.
